Candle Chalk Art

We created candle and lights art for the first week of Advent. This is using oil and chalk pastels on black paper.

The candlestick is a tall rectangle colored dark to light as it gets closer to the flame. Use oil or chalk pastels for the candlestick.  On a 9x12 paper,  the candle is about 3x6in.

Draw a wick in grey and add a decent sized flame just above the candle.  About the size of a quarter.  Light colored wax drips down the edge of the candle like frosting.

Be as colorful as you wish with the smudged chalk circle of light. This is achieved with using the side of the chalk,  in smooth circular strokes. Blend with fingers or tissue if desired.

Wispy, dark and light green strokes make the evergreen wreath needles. Start with a single line,  then off of that line add the one needles. Vary the direction of each branch.  You might have something at home for inspiration?

Add berries or a ribbon to the wreath,  adding highlights on the edges close to the light source.

The littles opted for a string of lights design. Draw with oil pastels the curly string with oil pastel. Add  rectangle bulb bases and egg shaped bulbs. Then trace the outside edge of the bulbs with chalk. Brush the chalk outwards with your finger for a lit effect. You can add extra details with the oil pastels,  such as light filaments or holiday words in the middle.
