Summer Reading Challenge

My first child loved to read, all the time; couldn't get enough books. She read most everything I offered her, and gave me evaluation if I should offer it to her siblings. Most books I've chosen from my favorites, the classics, and reputable sources of recommendations. I thought this would be the pattern for all my children.
Her personal library is significant, and we also have two family libraries in our home for books that aren't in bedrooms. We've donated baskets and boxes full of books that were not up to standard, and we still have a good sized collection of fiction and non-fiction. We've become more mindful over the years what we allow and what's a keeper.
(Other library pic coming soon, in reorganizing mode)

However, the next three teens have been a challenge when it comes to getting them to read the books I bought and put on their homeschool shelves as mandatory reading. Somehow, they missed the "you MUST read these this year" part of their assignments. They go on to read other books of low quality or questionable content by borrowing them from friends or a quick grab at the library. Other days they don't want to read because their curriculum is heavy on the reading. They're also SLOW readers.  I save negative consequences for more serious matters, and I've tried to be lenient and foster their love of reading whatever they choose. It's made for good discussion. So it's never been a serious matter for them to read everything I offer.
So how do I incentivize my children to read the books I took the time and consideration to pick out for them?
Bring on the Summer Reading Challenge rewards system. There are enough books still on the shelves this summer that they chose to ignore, so I created this reward system, with their input, if they read those books. I'll also give them a small reward for giving me a written review of the books they read of their own choosing. With a reasonable goal of  2 good sized chapter books per month, another reward is given for reaching 6 books, with oral or written reviews.

An Overview of the sheet:

For every TEACHER CHOICE you read,  AND give an oral review, you earn: A REWARD TICKET [A day without chores. 1 Hour gaming/arcade OR Visit a Playground. Choice of family movie. Lunch out with Mom. Outing with Dad. Permission to sleep in.]

For every chapter book you read of YOUR CHOICE, AND write/type up a review, you earn:  Fill in the line with something they'd like. [such as time to paint, visit a museum, a round of golf, go to the pool, get a new something they've wanted, etc.]

For Reading 6 Books with Reviews: A Reward or Activity of Your Choice [Such as a Movie, Dessert, Friend Over, MP3 song, Outing, Kindle Book, etc… (up to $5 Value)]

Why not something the local library offers for a summer reading program?
Because then we have to go to the library where they will ask for books that are not of the quality I want them to read. Books that  Charlotte Mason and GK Chesterton would consider better for starting a fire which to read a better book by. However, they may reserve books from the library on our list if we chose not to buy them. And they may still turn in the local library's summer reading program slips when we go to pickup. We do utilize the library for movies and audiobooks, especially movies made from the books they've read.
Why include book reviews for summer reading?
That is how I can best evaluate that they read and comprehended the books. Also, because I often chose books with virtuous character development and meaningful content, there is more to discuss. Finally, the books I add were originally for during their school year, where I'd require the review. Notice, I gave the easier oral report for my book choices, and the more challenging written report for their choices. Yet, another incentive to gravitate towards my picks.

Whether you print out this free bookmark and rewards tickets, or devise your own, I hope it has inspired you in motivating those reluctant readers. If you have any other ideas for motivation or rewards, please share in the comments! I'd like to have a variety of reward tickets for them to choose from over the years.

Act of Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

ACT OF REPARATION TO THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who piously recite the act of reparation. A plenary indulgence is granted if it is publicly recited on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Requirements for obtaining a plenary indulgence:

· Do the work while in a state of grace

· Receive sacramental confession within 20 days of the work (several plenary indulgences may be earned per reception)

· Receive Eucharistic communion (one plenary indulgence may be earned per reception of Eucharist)

· Pray for the pope’s intentions (an Our Father and Hail Mary, or other appropriate prayer, is sufficient)

· Have no attachment to sin (even venial) — i.e., the Christian makes an act of the will to love God and despise sin.

Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence and contempt, behold us prostrate before you, eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which your loving Heart is everywhere subject.

Mindful, alas! that we ourselves have had a share in such great indignities, which we now deplore from the depths of our hearts, we humbly ask your pardon and declare our readiness to atone by voluntary expiation, not only for our own personal offenses, but also for the sins of those, who, straying far from the path of salvation, refuse in their obstinate infidelity to follow you, their Shepherd and Leader, or, renouncing the promises of their baptism, have cast off the sweet yoke of your law.

We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against you; we are now determined to make amends for the manifold offenses against Christian modesty in unbecoming dress and behavior, for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent, for the frequent violations of Sundays and holy-days, and the shocking blasphemies uttered against you and your Saints. We wish also to make amends for the insults to which your Vicar on earth and your priests are subjected, for the profanation, by conscious neglect or terrible acts of sacrilege, of the very Sacrament of your divine love, and lastly for the public crimes of nations who resist the rights and teaching authority of the Church which you have founded.

Would that we were able to wash away such abominations with our blood. We now offer, in reparation for these violations of your divine honor, the satisfaction you once made to your Eternal Father on the cross and which you continue to renew daily on our altars; we offer it in union with the acts of atonement of your Virgin Mother and all the Saints and of the pious faithful on earth; and we sincerely promise to make recompense, as far as we can with the help of your grace, for all neglect of your great love and for the sins we and others have committed in the past. Henceforth, we will live a life of unswerving faith, of purity of conduct, of perfect observance of the precepts of the Gospel and especially that of charity. We promise to the best of our power to prevent others from offending you and to bring as many as possible to follow you.

O loving Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mother, our model in reparation, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this act of expiation; and by the crowning gift of perseverance keep us faithful unto death in our duty and the allegiance we owe to you, so that we may all one day come to that happy home, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, God, forever and ever. Amen.

Holy Hour of Reparation Book

My grandmother had among her things to distribute to the family, many prayer books. I was glad to take the Holy Hour of Reparation book. I've grown to cherish my weekly Holy Hour of Adoration with Jesus in our church chapel. It wasn't until I finally opened up this book that I found the real treasure it was beyond sentimental, and what a treasure it should be for all adorers. The grace and indulgences are incredible, and the thought of offering reparation to my Jesus stirs my soul to consolations.

I learned about the indulgences and graces offered from any Holy Hour, a Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the importance of Prayers of Reparation.

*Holy Hour Indulgences*

All those who assist at the Holy Hour of Adoration gain a Plenary Indulgence under the conditions of Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, and prayers for the intention of the Holy Father. (Enchiridion of Indulgences, Vatican 1968)

Promises of the Heart of Christ to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

1. “I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.”

2. “I will establish peace in their homes.”

3. “I will comfort them in their afflictions.”

4. “I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all in death.”

5. “I will bestow a large blessing upon all their undertakings.”

6. “Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.”

7. “Tepid souls shall grow fervent.”

8. “I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart shall be set up and honored.”

9. “I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.”

10. “Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted out.”

11. “I promise thee in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving the Sacraments; My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”

It was a few months before reading this book, I felt the Holy Spirit telling my heart that I was to type up an Adoration book for myself and to share. After praying the hour, and seeing these promises, I KNEW this was what I needed to retype and share freely. The original copy was designed for a group event, with a leader, so my revisions are set for private reflection. While I am not at all opposed to using "Thee, Thou, didst, art" in prayer, I know that my teenagers and others would appreciate a modern form of "You" and "are" so that is also different.  I also have fallen in love with the recitation of other prayers during Adoration worth including in a book. You could easily pray for 2 hours with all that is included in my Adoration book.

So after a few days of praying while I typed, I added my favorite vintage fonts and images. Perhaps someday I'll design a trendy option, but for now I actually prefer this style, don't you? It's a subtle reminder that people have been praying this for a century, along with my grandmother, and now it is my turn to pray and pass it along to my family.

I hope you'll print a copy or a dozen, and share them with your family, your friends, your prayer partners, and your chapel. The file has (28) 8.5x11 Pages, that you could print back to back. I was able to find a printer setting to print it Booklet style so each page is on half a sheet, thereby using only 7 sheets of paper per book.

The Original Book's Cover

“In June 1933, the idea for The Soul Assurance Prayer Plan was revealed to a layman during a Holy Hour visitation. On June 4, 1935, after two years of discernment, the layman and Reverend Lyons, with ecclesiastical permission, expressed the idea of the Holy Hour in a single leaflet. Since that time, this devotion, with Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception as the chosen Protectress, has spread throughout the world. In 1945, the Holy Hour of Reparation book was published, and shortly after, was taken to Rome and presented to Pope Pius XII for his approval.”

The Pope studied the book and approved it saying,

“This is one of the most powerful prayers that you can pray and is second only to the Mass.”

Nihil Obstat  - John J. Clifford, S. J.  Censor Liborum

THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS . . . began this devotion of the Holy Hour of Reparation, when He entered the Garden of Gethsemane on Mount Olivet. He said to His Apostles: "My soul is sorrowful even unto death. Stay ye here and watch with Me." Later He said to them: "Could ye not watch one hour with Me? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." [Matt. 26:38, 40, 41]

As Jesus spoke to His Apostles, so He pleads with us to stay and watch and pray with Him. His Sacred Heart is filled with sadness, because so many doubt Him, despise Him, insult Him, ridicule Him, spit upon Him, slap Him, accuse Him, condemn Him. In the Sacrament of His Love, so many forget Him. Every mortal sin brings down the terrible scourges on His Sacred Body, presses the sharp thorns into His Sacred Head, and hammers the cruel nails into His Sacred Hands and Feet.

The ingratitude of mankind continually pierces His Sacred Heart.

When Jesus saw the sins of the world and the reparation that must be made to His Heavenly Father, He began to fear and to be sad and sorrowful. "Kneeling down, He prayed: 'Father, if Thou will, remove this chalice from Me; But not My Will, Thine be done: There appeared an Angel from Heaven to strengthen Him; and being in agony, He prayed the longer, and His sweat became as drops of blood trickling to the ground." [Luke 22:41, 44]

The Sacred Heart of Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary: "Make reparation for the ingratitude of men. Spend an hour in prayer to appease Divine justice, to implore mercy for sinners, to honor Me, to console Me for My bitter suffering when abandoned by My Apostles, when they did not WATCH ONE HOUR WITH ME."

"That the necessity of Expiation and Reparation is especially urgent today must be evident to everyone who considers the present plight of the world, 'seated in wickedness' [John 5:9]. The Sacred Heart promised to St. Margaret Mary that he would reward abundantly with His graces all those who should render this honor to His Heart."

Pope Pius XI, “ MISERENTISSIMUS REDEMPTOR”

Holy Thursday Bread

This recipe is a family favorite around Lent time for bread and water fasts, especially for picky children. These are reminiscent of molasses cookies.  It's a soft but dense bread that baked in a sheet pan can be cut into many little cubes or cut like biscuits serving minimum 12 people. (35 - 3" circles unleavened)(104 - 1" cubes leavened)

We leave out the baking powder and soda to make it unleavened for Holy Thursday. With this change, its best to roll out to 1/4 inch and cut into circles (with a canning lid or similar, then cut or fork poke in a cross before baking. Everyone gets their own round biscuit. They are not flexible like a flatbread/pita/naan, but like a soft, chewy bread cookie.  It's been a long time favorite tradition for our Holy Thursday dinner.

DIRECTIONS

Whisk together:
6 c. White Flour
1/2 c. Brown Sugar
1 Tbsp Salt
1 Tbsp Cinnamon
~
2 tsp Baking Powder (omit if wanting unleavened)
2 tsp Baking Soda (omit if wanting unleavened)

In a medium bowl or stand mixer, mix well:
1/4 c. Honey
1/4 c. Molasses (or just use 1/2 cup Honey)
1/2 c. Crisco shortening
2 c. Warm Water

Mix all together for about 5 minutes. I used my Kitchen Aid stand mixer - arm locked! Do not overknead, but batter should become less sticky. Let set for 10 minutes.

Leavened: Grease/flour a large jelly roll pan/cookie sheet (one with edges). Roll dough out in pan to around 1/4" thick. Cut into 1/2" squares or desired size with a pizza cutter before baking.

Unleavened: Roll out into additional flour about 1/4in thick. Cut into circles with a canning lid, or desired size/shape. Set onto lined (or greased/floured) baking sheet. Then cut or fork poke in a cross.

Bake at 450* for 10 minutes.

When cooled, the leavened cubes break apart easily at cut marks. The unleavened biscuits are filling with only one or two. Serve warm or room temp with grapes or jelly, and The Last Supper scripture!

I remember when I was a little girl our church made a huge batch of this. As soon as I tasted the first bite it took me back to that moment. Ahhhh.
